Yukon College Assessments

The Yukon College Assessments measure a student’s abilities in mathematics and English, and help Academic Advisors place students in the appropriate courses.

Next-Generation ACCUPLACER Reading and Writing
  • These tests place students in classes that match their skill levels and align the content domain continuum to accommodate the changing landscape of higher education
  • Next-Generation Reading assesses the test-taker's ability to derive meaning and to determine the meaning of words in various contexts
  • Next-Generation Writing evaluates the test-taker's ability to revise and edit multiparagraph texts
  • This test is done on a computer
  • There is no time limit for this assessment; most people take 2-3 hours to complete it

For the testing session, you must bring photo ID.


When will I get the results?

You will receive your results within a week (often sooner) of completing the Next-Generation ACCUPLACER tests. Results will also be forwarded to the Admissions Office and entered into your student file. 

Your ACCUPLACER scores are valid for two years.
You may rewrite an assessment after six months have passed.

WritePlacer® Assessment
  • This test measures your ability to write effectively. You will write an essay (300 to 600 words) expressing your point of view on a given topic.
  • This test is done on a computer.
  • There is a 90 minute time limit for this assessment.
  • $15 per assessment.

How can I prepare for a Writeplacer assessment?

This test measures your ability to write effectively. You will be given an introduction to an important issue. You will then write an essay (minimum 300 words) expressing your point of view on that issue, supporting your opinion with reasons and examples. The score will be based on your focus, organization, development and support, sentence structure and mechanical conventions.

  • This test is done on a computer.
  • Sample essays are available.
  • There is a 70 minute time limit for this assessment.

The Reading Comprehension and Sentence Skills test scores are reported on a 120-point scale. These score are listed in the column titled Total Right Score on your score report sheet. Example: If your Total Right Score is 78, that equates to 78/120.

Your Writeplacer scores are valid for two years.
You may rewrite an assessment after six months have passed.

Math assessment

The Yukon College Mathematics assessment has two parts. The first part consists of 30 questions on basic math skills (whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percent, ratio and proportions, and word problems). The second part, also 30 questions, tests knowledge of introductory and intermediate algebra skills.

The Yukon College Mathematics assessment uses a multiple-choice format.

Proctoring / Invigilation Services

  • Yukon College Testing Centre provides invigilation of tests and exams from colleges, universities and institutions across Canada, and the US.
  • Contact the Testing Centre Coordinator to schedule exams or for more information at 867.668.8832 or testing@yukoncollege.yk.ca.
  • Invigilation fees will be $75 for exams up to three hours and $25 for each hour thereafter (effective July 1, 2019).
