Northern Energy Innovation has developed an Energy Literacy course through the Canadian Colleges for a Resilient Recovery Program (C2R2).
This is a free, online, self-guided, interactive course which will take approximately 15 hours to complete. The course will be available to students for 90 days at a time.
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of energy literacy. Exploring how the electric energy grid functions and the challenges and opportunities being experienced during our current energy transition.
The course will explore energy literacy through a technical, social, and political lens. The energy transition will be explored from a northern lens using case studies that focus on equipment and technologies relevant to remote northern communities and remote-integrated grids, exploring the challenges and benefits associated with integrating renewables into these systems.
This course will provide students with a fundamental understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with the energy transition. The course is taught through a northern lens but is relevant to anyone interested in learning about or expanding their understanding of energy literacy.
Prerequisites: None.
Upon completion of this course learners will:
- Understand fundamental electrical terms and concepts
- Explain and describe the key features of the electric power grid
- Evaluate the challenges and opportunities of integrating a variety of renewable energy sources into a power system
- Discuss and analyze the challenges and opportunities related to the energy transition through a technical, political, and social lens.
- Analyze case studies of how renewable energy can be used within remote communities and identify benefits/challenges
- Discuss the role that energy efficiency technologies have in the energy transition
- Develop knowledge of educational pathways and other resources to continue learning.

Energy is a fundamental part of our modern world. We interact with, use, and depend on energy for nearly every facet of our lives. Energy Literacy is a wholistic concept that explores how our electrical energy systems work, but more fundamentally it explores our relationship with energy. The energy transition is already underway in Canada and around the world and the choices we make now will shape the future.
To engage in this transition in a meaningful way, individuals will need to understand the technological, social, and political elements that make up the energy landscape. The goal of this course is to provide students with the tools they need to make informed energy decisions and to empower individuals to discuss energy in a meaningful way.
