Report to Community highlights Yukon College in 2011

WHITEHORSE – The good work, accomplishments and growth of Yukon College staff and students are highlighted in a new ‘Report to the Community’ released today.

The 16-page report gives Yukoners a chance to catch up with stories about the College that may have not made the news last year. It’s also a chance to get a glimpse of the ‘big picture’ of how the College is doing.

“It’s an engaging, user-friendly way for people to really get a sense of where the College is today,” says Jacqueline Bedard, the director of College Relations and International. “This is a standard publication for post-secondary education institutions, reaching out to inform the public they serve.”

Readers get an overview of the size of the college, its impact on the local economy, and a history of the College through a timeline. Honours such as visits from the Governor General, and the president of the Canadian Space agency are highlighted, along with programs creating a national buzz, and the opening of new facilities in several Yukon communities.

The College’s relationships with First Nations governments, industry and learning organizations in 2011 are also detailed.

A few quick facts from the Report:

•  the student/teacher ratio at the College is an average of 11:1
•  it has a $37 million budget, and employs 509 Yukoners
•  international students from places like Austria, China, Croatia, Ghana, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, and Vietnam came to the College last year
•  At the Skills Canada competition in Quebec City, two gold and two silver medals were awarded to Yukon College alumni

“If you’ve been wondering just what goes on ‘up the hill’ at the College, this is a good place to start,” says Bedard.

The Report was written and designed in house by College staff. In an effort to be green, most of the distribution is being done electronically, through the College’s website, Facebook, and Yukon networks.
