This network was part of a national research program funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) with six regional networks and a national centre and facilitator - the Canadian Social Economy Hub. This node served as the social economy research sector for Northern Canada. It was built around the three Northern Territorial Colleges and their respective research institutions and links researchers working in the North with Northern students, community organizations, and educational institutions.
Yukon College, now Yukon University, served as the main coordination centre of the network. The network involved a number of University partners that provided research expertise and direction for the 4 main research themes of the program. In addition to research seeking to conceptualize and inventory the social economy in the North, the network investigated the particular relationships that exist between social economy and indigenous cultures, resource regimes, and the state.
This network was part of the Canadian Social Economy Suite. The Suite consists of six regional research centres (Quebec, Atlantic, Southern Ontario, Saskatchewan-Manitoba-Northern Ontario, BC-Alberta, North -Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, N. Quebec & Labrador) and a National Research Hub (Canadian Social Economy Hub). The Suite involved practitioners, researchers, community partners and the civil society. It was funded through a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
