Northern Institute of Social Justice (NISJ)

The Northern Institute of Social Justice (NISJ) develops and delivers social justice-related training and education for workers in a broad range of jobs.

The training offered by NISJ gives Yukon residents access to a variety of learning opportunities that are nationally recognized and uniquely customized for the North. The majority of our clients work in the fields of justice, social justice, administrative justice, and regulatory enforcement compliance.

The role of the NISJ is:

  • to consolidate, develop and deliver social justice-related training and education for jobs with a social justice -related component, and
  • to encourage support for related research.

In fulfilling its role, the NISJ addresses two broad challenges facing Yukon employers and employees in delivering social justice-related programs and services:

  • the need for entry level training, generic training, position-specific training, and
  • the need to develop, retain and attract a well-qualified workforce.

The NISJ meets these needs by focusing on training that is relevant, integrated, recognized and accredited.

NISJ is located in Whitehorse at the Yukon College – Ayamdigut Campus. Funded by Yukon Government’s Department of Education, Advanced Education, the Institute is a part of and works within the Yukon College structure.

NISJ opened in 2010. Currently, the Institute is primarily Yukon-focused. However, it has undertaken some pan-northern work and a pan-northern initiative is in development.
