Yukon College conducts lockdown exercise as part of monthly safety awareness initiative

Mobile AppWHITEHORSE—All Yukon College campuses will be participating in a planned lockdown exercise on Thursday, November 30, 2017 between 11:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.

The scheduled drill is part of the College’s new “Safety Months” initiative, aimed at increasing awareness of safety protocols at Yukon College. The initiative includes monthly safety information reminders and practice exercises focusing on a different topic from the College’s Emergency Response Plan.

"Yukon College is committed to building a safety-focused culture for our students, employees and visitors,” said Colleen Wirth, Director of Student Infrastructure and Support at Yukon College. “This exercise will allow us to practice lockdown procedures and make any adjustments as needed."

The College conducts regular fire evacuation drills and has previously participated in earthquake preparedness exercises. This will be the first time a lockdown exercise is practiced.

All students, staff and visitors are encouraged to review the College’s Emergency Response Plan online outlining processes and procedures that reduce the risk to safety in an emergency situation. An overview of the Emergency Response Plan is also posted throughout all buildings at each campus.

The Yukon College community is also encouraged to download and turn on notifications for the College’s YC Mobile app, available for both Apple and Android operating systems. The app is free to download and contains an emergency notification messaging system. Users will receive a real-time notification of the start and end of the planned lockdown exercise.

In preparation for the drill, the Yukon College Campus Safety and Security team shared information about lockdown procedures to students and employees throughout November via email. Correspondence also encouraged discussion while addressing questions.
