Collaboration & Cooperation - Strategies for teaching and learning in groups

Working together in groups can offer many benefits for learning, depending on how the cooperative/collaborative student work is structured.  When choosing a strategy, consider your specific goals (learning outcomes), your students, and the context of the course.

This article on Cooperative Learning Techniques from Carleton College offers a very helpful overview of the different types of strategies and their strengths for learning.

Fun & Games - Tools to build learning games

Kahoot! is a Free Game based Learning Platform.  Use Kahoot in your F2F or Web Conferencing (synchronous) classes to:

  • Spark discussion or debate
  • Identify gaps in learning (formative assessment tool)
  • Recap
  • Teach subleties or dispel myths
  • Build confidence
  • Facilitate Social or small group learning

In-class polling and real-time quizzes - Tools & Tips

Polling and real-time quizzes are a great way to enage students in the learning process.  Consider using polling or short, low-stakes quizzes to:

  • check for prior knowledge before you begin a new subject
  • check for understanding during or after a learning activity
  • start a discussion by asking thought-provoking, open-ended questions
  • gather feedback by collecting anonymous votes or opinions

Suggested polling tools:

iClickers are physical polling devices that allow students to choose between up to five options using a simple remote control.  These are a good option for students who are less comfortable with technology. The college owns a set that can be used for classes - please contact a member of the teachign and learning team for more information!

Socrative is a free cloud-based student response system. It allows teachers to create simple quizzes and polls that students can respond to from laptops, smart phones or tablets.  Socrative is simple, user friendly, and offers the following benefits:

  • Students can use their own (familiar) technology (smartphones/tablets)
  • Students can use Socrative from any location, making it suitable both face-to-face or online synchronous classes

Poll Everywhere is another popular online option that offers benefits similar to Socrative.  It is free for classes of up to 40 students.  See their Getting Started guide for examples of question types and instructions on how to begin.

Universal design for learning (UDL) - Resources

As instructors, we strive to create environments that maximize learning and support success for all our students. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) provides a framework for designing instruction that is inclusive for diverse students. 

This Big List of UDL ideas from Yukon College faculty was generated at the 2017 Faculty Retreat.  It is an extensive inventory of flexible instructional strategies.

This quick reference on Universal Design for Learning Guidelines lays out the three pillars of UDL and their implircations for teaching.

This article entitled Universal Design for Learning in Postsecondary Education: Reflections on Principles and their Application from the Center for Applied Special Technology and Harvard University reflects on potential applications of universal design for learning in university courses. 

UDL Guidelines: Theory and Practice version is an alternate representation of the UDL Guidelines.
