YC Northern Climate Exchange launches Whitehorse Green Guide

Friday, April 09, 2010

Whitehorse– Northern Climate Exchange of the Yukon College Research Centre of Excellence launches its first edition of the Whitehorse Green Guide. The guide is in the form of a website with a search toolfor information about where to find ‘green’ products and services in Whitehorse. The website includes additional resources and information on green principles and practices and provides links to other supporting information and resources.

For the purposes of the guide, we have defined ‘green’ products and services as those which have one or more of the attributes and/or certifications that promote any or all of the following outcomes: increased energy efficiency; reduction of greenhouse gas emissions; reduction of toxins; and/or waste reduction. The Whitehorse Green Guide has been developed to help people in Whitehorse identify where and what green products and services are available in Whitehorse and to provide information to help people make more sustainable choices. An online survey was conducted to gather the information.

Partners for the green guide include: Northern Climate ExChange, Yukon College; Energy Solutions Center, YG; Climate Change Secretariat, YG; Yukon Federal Council; City of Whitehorse.

New Human Services Certificate Program

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

Whitehorse – A new certified Human Services program is now available for those interested in social service careers. The former Community Services Worker Program was revamped over the past year and is now offered as a nine-month Human Services Certificate Program. This theoretical and practical program prepares students for paraprofessional support work in the human services field.

The program continues to focus on front line work but the curriculum has changed to give students more access to other programs should they wish to continue in academic studies. “Part of our strategic direction is to strengthen our programs,” says the Chair for Health, Education and Human Services at Yukon College, Lori Eastmure. “We wanted this program to serve both the adult learners who are already working in the field seeking current knowledge and the learners who are exploring future career options and may want to branch into advanced areas.”  Course work runs from September to May with the option of full-time or part-time studies. A two-year diploma program is in the process of being proposed. Human services studies can branch into social work, sociology, or psychology degrees.

The inter-professional program prepares students for work with children, youth, and adults living with challenging conditions. Graduates gain proficient knowledge and skills to work in client-supporting teams. Employment is available in areas of youth services, alcohol and drug services, women shelters, and human care facilities.

Applications are now being accepted and registration begins June 1.
