Indspire

Indspire, formerly the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation, has evolved into the largest non-governmental funding body for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis post secondary students across Canada. Bursary and scholarship awards are provided to First Nation, Inuit, and Métis students annually across a diverse range of disciplines.

In total, Indspire has disbursed over $49-million to over 14,000 recipients since its inception. Indspire offers financial assistance (scholarships and bursaries) through four major categories: Post Secondary Education, Fine Arts, Health Careers, and Oil & Gas Aboriginal Trades & Technology.

Sysco Edmonton Scholarship: $

Eligibility Criteria
The award winner must:
     
  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
    •  
  • have completed Yukon College’s Culinary Arts program as a full-time student
    •  
  • have demonstrated quality, leadership and vision in food service, specifically in the area of food safety
    •  
  • be planning a career in the food service industry
    •  
  • be nominated by the Culinary Arts program coordinator and the Culinary Arts program instructor

Documents required: 
None. Award winner must be nominated by Culinary Arts faculty, who will submit the completed nomination form to the Yukon College Awards Committe at the end of the Culinary Arts program

 

 


Rendezvous Rotary Club Culinary Arts Award: $

Applicants must:
• be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
• have completed Yukon College’s Culinary Arts program as a full-time student
• have demonstrated quality, leadership and vision in food service, specifically in the area of food safety
• be planning a career in the food service industry
• be nominated by the Culinary Arts program coordinator and the Culinary Arts program instructor

The bursary will be awarded annually at the end of the Winter term.

Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada: $

The winner of this award will be nominated by the program faculty, based on a combination of high academic standing, leadership, service and best all-round performance at the end the first year of the Mineral Resources Program.

Once the second year of the program is established, the award will go to a student who is entering the second year of the program, based on the same criteria as above and the nomination of the program faculty.


Doris Steinbraten Scholarship: $
Application Deadline: Friday, August 31, 2012

The Yukon Teachers’ Association offers this $750.00 scholarship to one outstanding graduate of a Yukon high school. The recipient should conform to the following criteria:

     
  • The award will be made on the basis of scholarship. A minimum standard will be deemed to be an overall average of 75% with 66% as the lowest acceptable subject mark.
    •  
  • The award will be made without regard to subject area so long as University entrance standing has been achieved.
    •  
  • Where more than two candidates are judged of equal worth, financial need may be taken into consideration.
    •  
  • Preference in awarding the scholarships will be given to a graduate who has completed the major portion of their training in the Yukon educational system and who are about to enter a College of Education or a College of Arts and Science leading to combined studies in a College of Education.
    •  
  • An award of $500.00 or more would render an applicant ineligible if he/she has received notice of that award before receiving a YTA Scholarship.

Holmes Foundation “Make it Right” Scholarship and Bursaries
Application Deadline: Sunday, September 30, 2012

Eligibility criteria:

     
  • Applicants must be entering or enrolled in a residential construction program at a Canadian college. This includes students in pre-apprenticeship programs and apprentices who have finished all but their last in-school session.

  • Certified copies of your transcripts from all preceding years in the construction program

Kaminak Mineral Resources Program Student Awards: $
Application Deadline: Thursday, November 15, 2012

One award will be offered to a Yukon first nations female student, and one to a non-first nations female student in Yukon College's Mineral Resources Program.

The awards will be awarded annually in the Winter term, commencing with the Winter term of the 2012-2013 academic year.

For one award, preference will be given to female applicants. If there are no female applicants, other applicants from the Mineral Resources Program will be considered.

For the other award, preference will be given to Yukon first nations female applicants. If there are no first nations female applicants, other female applicants from the Mineral Resources Program will be considered. If there are no female applicants, other applicants from the Mineral Resources Program will be considered.

Ni’iinlii Njik Renewable Resource Management Scholarship: $

This award is provided by Natural Resources Department, Vuntut Gwitchin Government.
 

Eligibility criteria:

  • be enrolled as a full-time student in the Renewable Resource Management Program at Yukon College.

  • Preference will be given to applicants who are Vuntut Gwitchin Citizens. If no Vuntut Gwitchin Citizens apply, preference will be given to applicants who are Yukon First Nations Citizens. If no Yukon First Nations Citizens apply, other students in the Renewable Resource Management Program will be considered.

Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program: $

Terry Fox Humanitarian Awards are open to graduating secondary level students and those currently studying towards a first university degree or diploma in a Canadian post-secondary institution. For students in Quebec, you must be entering 2nd year cégep or university.

 

Award recipients must meet the following criteria:

     
  • Involvement in voluntary humanitarian work.
    •  
  • Canadian citizens or landed immigrants.
    •  
  • Undergraduates studying towards their first university degree or diploma at a Canadian post-secondary institution in Canada.
    •  
  • Maintain a satisfactory academic standing and continued involvement in voluntary humanitarian and community work.
    •  
  • Students are eligible to receive the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award until they have received their first university degree (for a maximum of four years), provided they have maintained a standard of humanitarian work and personal conduct which, in the opinion of the Board of Directors, justifies the award.

Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program: $

Eligibility
The Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program will consider candidates who:

  • Are currently in their graduating year or graduated in the last two years from a Canadian high school.

• be enrolled as full-time students at Yukon College in the second term of the first year of either the Business Administration or Information and Communication Technology program
• have completed two years of secondary education in the Yukon school system

RBC Aboriginal Student Awards Program: $
Application Deadline: Thursday, February 28, 2013

Eligibility criteria: You are eligible to apply to the RBC Aboriginal Student Awards Program if you are a Status Indian, a Non-status Indian, Inuit or Metis and meet these criteria:

     
  • You are a permanent resident or citizen of Canada
    •  
  • You have been accepted to or are currently attending an accredited post-secondary institution in Canada
    •  
  • You maintain a full course load that leads to a recognized degree, certificate or diploma

  • You require financial assistance to pursue your education

Watson Lake Student Assistance Endowment Fund: $
Application Deadline: Tuesday, June 25, 2013

Eligibility criteria:

  • Selection is based on need or merit, references and previous performance and suitability of goals.

  • You must have lived in the catchment area for at least 6 months.
  •  
  • Preference will be given to a student attending Yukon College.

Background: The fund is a joint creation of the Watson Lake Community Campus Committee of Yukon College and the Watson Lake Training Advisory Board. This fund was created to supplement graduates, college level or mature students in the catchment area of Watson Lake, including Lower Post, Upper Liard and Two Mile who require assistance in continuing their education at either Yukon College or a recognized university or college or training centre.

PSAC Scholarship program: $
Application Deadline: Sunday, June 30, 2013

The program consists of 14 scholarships for dependant children of PSAC members and three scholarships for PSAC members who are returning to university, college or a recognized institute of higher learning on a full-time basis. PSAC members must be in good standing as of March 31st of the current year.

The scholarships are not restricted to first-year students. No more than one scholarship will be awarded to the same family in a given year and no applicant will be awarded a scholarship more than once.

The scholarships are awarded primarily based on the merit of the 800-word essay according to the topic determined for the given year. The application will be reviewed as a whole; however the PSAC Scholarship Committee will place most emphasis upon the submitted essay.

The PSAC reserves the right to withhold the granting of an award if no applicant is deemed to possess the necessary requirements, or for other valid reasons.The PSAC Scholarship Committee may award a PSAC Regional Scholarship outside of a particular region if no applicants from that region are deemed to possess the necessary requirements or there were no completed applications received from that region. All submissions become the property of the PSAC.

Yukon Energy Scholarship Program

General Scholarship - four awards of $2,000 each

These scholarships are for post secondary students studying electrical or maintenance engineering, electronic systems engineering, civil engineering, business administration or management studies. Two scholarships are given to first year students, and two to students entering second year or beyond.

Yukon Energy Ed Chambers Memorial Trades Scholarship - two awards of $1,000 each

This is a new scholarship in memory of Ed Chambers. Mr. Chambers served on Yukon Energy’s Board of Directors from February 1991 to May 2004 and was a tremendous asset to this Corporation. This scholarship is for students entering pre-apprenticeship or entry level programs in the areas of electrician, power line technician, electronics technician, heavy duty mechanic, industrial instrument mechanic, industrial mechanics (millwright) or machinist.

Yukon Energy Scholarship – First Nation Component

Yukon Energy also provides scholarships to students from the Nacho Nyak Dun and Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nations. Annual scholarships of up to $1,000 are awarded to deserving members of each of the two First Nations.

Yukon Government Health and Social Services Bursaries

Health Profession Education Bursary
Application Deadline: June 30 of each year
Award amount: $5,000.00/year for a maximum of four years


Eligibility criteria:

     
  • Proof of Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status maintained throughout the period of the bursary.
    •  
  • Proof of current or previous residency in the Yukon of at least three consecutive years within the last five years
    •  
  • Copy of letter of acceptance into an approved health profession education program in Canada. This can be conditional pending final acceptance.

Applications shall contain personal information including:

     
  • Full name, address, telephone and email contact information
    •  
  • Residency information
    •  
  • Information on funding available to the applicant from any other agency to assist with education costs, including the name of each agency and the amount received or expected from that source.
    •  
  • Copies of documents to meet eligibility criteria are required. (e.g. birth certificate or citizenship certificate to demonstrate Canadian citizenship).
    •  
  • Proof of Yukon residency for three consecutive years of the past five years. Proof can be demonstrated through items such as Yukon Health Insurance Service records, employer’s note, school principal’s note.
    •  
  • A letter indicating interest in and/or commitment to health care services through personal, employment, education or volunteer history are required as part of the application package. This letter should include reference names and contact information that can be used to verify experience.

Medical Education Bursary
Application Deadline: June 30 of each year
Award amount: $10,000.00/year for up to 4 years of medical school $15,000.00/year for up to 2 years during medical residency, family medicine only Eligibility criteria:

     
  • Proof of Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status maintained throughout the period of the bursary.
    •  
  • Proof of current or previous residency in the Yukon of at least 3 consecutive years within the last 5 years or of having received the Yukon Grant provided by the Yukon Department of Education.
    •  
  • Copy of letter of acceptance into an approved Canadian medical education program. This can be conditional pending final acceptance.
    •  
  • An eligible person who starts medical education in a country other than Canada can become eligible for the bursary when and if they transfer into an approved Canadian medical education program. (For example, could be eligible during family medicine residency if that residency occurs in Canada.)

Applications shall include

The bursary will be made available to up to four new students per year and the maximum amount available will be $5,000/year for up to four years of nursing school. Applicants will be selected by a bursary committee made up of representatives from the Yukon Registered Nurses Association, Council of Yukon First Nations, Whitehorse General Hospital, Community Nursing and Continuing Care.

Margaret (Peg) Harper Memorial Scholarship: $

This scholarship is provided through fund raising by the Fireweed Lions Club in the community of Whitehorse in memory of Lion Peg Harper. Lion Peg started her career in nursing and dedicated many years of her life to the volunteer organizations of the Fireweed Lioness and Fireweed Lions Club. During her time, Peg deeply touched the hearts and lives of those around her.

The aim of the scholarship is to assist a deserving 2nd or subsequent year student from the Yukon to continue pursuing his or her education in a recognized nursing program. Should no 2nd or subsequent year student apply for this scholarship, award may be made to a qualifying 1st year student in pursuit of same.

A bursary, or bursaries, not exceeding TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS ($20,000.00) in the aggregate, will be awarded annually to

Aron Senkpiel Scholarship: $

Eligibility criteria:
Applicants must:

  •  
  • provide proof of attendance at a Yukon high school for at least one year;
  •  
  • Have completed at least one year of full time studies at Yukon College immediately prior to this application;
  •  
  • Attach a letter of acceptance from the educational institution you will be attending;
  •  
  • Attach a covering letter outlining your educational goals and describing what steps you have taken to reach this goal;
  •  
  • Provide a current statement of marks.

  • Brief covering letter including any community activities you have been involved in

Penny Raven Memorial Bursary Fund: $
Application Deadline: Sunday, December 01, 2013

The original application form must be completed, legible in black ink, within the spaces provided and must be mailed to the Yukon WITT office no later than August 1 for the Fall session or no later than December 1st for the Spring session.

Eligibility criteria: To be eligible you must:

  •  
  • Be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
  •  
  • Plan to register as a full-time student at an accredited technical training institute in the Yukon.
  •  
  • Have not previously received a bursary from the Yukon Women in Trades and Technology Bursary Fund.
  •  
  • Be a Yukon Resident and provide proof of residency.
  •  
  • Be a woman over the age of 19.
