Whitehorse – Students at Yukon College’s Working and Leading Program will host their annual Christmas dinner at Angel’s Nest Shelter on Wednesday, December 1. The students have coordinated the planning, shopping, and preparing for the festive dinner for disadvantaged youth. Working and Leading students feel strongly about providing a service for those who might not have an opportunity to celebrate during the festive season.
The students have planned a menu of ham, turkey and all the fixings, veggies, macaroni salad, mashed potatoes, and desserts. The team of nine Yukon College students cooks and serves the dinner as well as does the cleaning up.
The students received donations from Extra Foods, G-P Distributing, and Superstore. The Culinary Arts students contributed to the cooking. The event takes place on Wednesday, December 1 at 6pm.

Whitehorse – Yukon College will be offering a tailor-made sheet metal program. This 5-month program stems from requests at the community level and from local industry that require skilled sheet metal workers to feed the growing economy. The College, in partnership with Advanced Education, created a winter pre-employment course to meet that demand. This new course specifically addresses the short-term training period over the winter.
“We are pleased that we have a good working relationship with the community where we can fulfill the requests,” says Trades and Technology Chair David Nugent. “We feel fortunate that we have readily available the facilities, expertise, and flexibility to meet the industry needs. Strengthening our ties with the community to increase programming is part of our vision in developing the College.”
The course is designed to meet the immediate industry needs. Students will be provided with knowledge and experience in making metal products such as heating, venting & air conditioning systems, roof drainage systems, electrical panels, metal showcases, and display neon and metal sign equipment. The hours in the course can be applied towards an apprenticeship or can be transferred to other post-secondary institutions. Students may also be offered technical credit towards a Yukon apprenticeship and the opportunity to challenge the Sheet Metal Apprenticeship Level 1 (first-year) exam.
